Did you know that homework can affect the student's physical and mental health? Students are suffering from major mental and physical breakdowns such as, stress which can even cause depression due to the amount of homework they receive weekly. Homework is also meddling the student in other areas such as rest. The students are not sleeping the required amount of hours to do well in school the following day. In short, all teachers in America should decrease the amount of homework assigned to prevent affecting the students physical and mental health. It has been claimed that an Italian teacher that used to teach in Venice, created homework as a punishment for his students. How much is too much homework? According to Pope’s study, more than two hours of homework a night may be counterproductive. Students in these type of schools complete an average about 3.1 hours of homework each night. Students who did more hours of homework experienced greater behavioral engagement in school, but they also experienced also more academic stress, physical health problems, and lack of balance in their lives. Denise Pope, a senior lecturer at the Stanford University School of Education and a co-author of a study published in the Journal of Experimental Education has found that “too much homework has negative effects on well-being and behavior on students”. The negative effects can extend to students' lives outside of school, including family, friends, and other extracurricular activities. The researchers also found that spending too much time on homework meant that students were not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills. Students were more likely to forgo activities, stop seeing friends or family, and not participate in hobbies. Many students felt forced or obligated to choose homework over developing other talents or skills because parents encourage their kids to the do well in school because school is everything. This makes sense because one of the main roles of homework is to prepare the child to be responsible and organized to get themselves together. However, people may think that homework can help the children be responsible but when students are doing homework all they think about is completing their work to get their grade. Students are not analyzing their work which means they are not benefiting the use of their homework which is to help them understand any material covered in class. Another opposing claim is that “Homework is a great way to bring the family together. Older siblings can also get involved by helping their younger brothers and sisters with their homework assignments. This can lead to far greater peace and harmony in families where there is a significant age gap between siblings”. I agree that homework gives students the chance to develop a much more firm understanding of their learning materials, while also giving parents and older siblings that may not typically have much involvement in their loved one’s day to day educational living the opportunity to become a larger part of their child and/or sibling’s life.
