The Grizzly bear, scientifically known as Ursus arctos horribilis Threatened in the mountain prairie region, which consist of Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Wyoming. The grizzly is scientifically classified by the following kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Mammalia, Order: Carnivora, Family: Ursidae, Genus: Ursus, Species: Ursus arctos horribilis. Surprisingly the polar bear is the closet living relative to the grizzly bear. Cross breeding happened after the last ice age leading to offspring that share many similar traits. The word "grizzly” interestingly enough means "grizzled" referring to the golden and grey tips of the hair. Grizzly bears are generally larger and are known by their long, curved front claws, and humped shoulders. The average weight of a male grizzly ranges from 400‐ 600 pounds and 250‐ 350pounds for females. Grizzly bears live relatively long lives, and individuals are known to have lived up to 40 years. More generally speaking the oldest age classes are listed at 28 years for males and 23 years for females, although there have been many individuals that lived longer.…show more content…
