Q: Do gender roles with childhood toys affect career choices as an adult? A: Gender roles are very prevalent during childhood when it come to children’s toys. Girls toys can be referred to as “housewife toys”. They often play with toy kitchens, dolls, drawing, and other crafts. These toys suggest when these young girls grow up, they will cook, clean, and be a mother and wife. Majority of these young girl’s toys do not give any hints of a future career that these females may want to have. Boys toys are tool sets, balls, airplanes, Lego, and cars. These gender separations may make girls think that they cannot do certain things like drive cars, use tools, or even play sports when they grow up. According to Vanessa Barford (2014), in the UK, there is a feminist campaign group called Let Toys Be Toys that is fighting for retailers to “organize toys by genre not gender”. If society around the world adopts this mindset and this concept spreads, we may be able to decrease the stereotypes that are put onto children toys, but that still would not be enough. The parents and teachers of children need to be certain that they are not portraying these misconceptions onto their children. Barford (2014) quotes Becky Francis, a professor of education, as she says “different types of toys give different messages about what’s appropriate for boys and girls to do, and have different educational content- both elements are important and might have a bearing on schooling and career choices later”.
