Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect and Excellence (“I CARE”) are the Core Values, while Trustworthy, Accessible, Quality, Agile, Innovative, and Integrated are the Characteristics that apply universally across all of Veterans Affairs. The five Core Values define “who we are,” the culture and how every VA employee care for Veterans, their families and other beneficiaries. The Core Characteristics define “what we stand for,” and help guide how to perform the core mission; it shapes the strategy, and influence the resource allocation and other important decisions made within the VA. As a VA employee, Ms Fernandez’ goal is to improve the care received by every veteran, particularly the challenged and underprivileged, the homeless veterans.
