Before the constitution was created, the document that kept the states governed was called the articles of confederation. This was considered the nation’s first constitution. Although, this document wasn’t successful. This caused what’s known as the constitutional convention. “The US declared its independence from Great Britain in 1776. In 1781 the Articles of Confederation was written to create a ‘firm league of friendship’ between the 13 states.”(Crouse, 5) The Articles of Confederation had many weaknesses. Some are: “Having only a :firm league of friendship” among states, having only one vote for each states, regardless of size, congress powerless to tax, no executive power to enforce acts of congress, no national court system.” (Crouse, 19) These weaknesses caused the Articles of Confederation to become a problem. “The states were jealous of each other, refused to support a central government, made foreign agreement, created their own money.” The nation realized that they needed to make…show more content…
They all decided on drafting the constitution and this would replace the Articles of Confederation. The delegates came up with a few Plans and Compromises. (Crouse, 21) The Virginia and New Jersey Plan were created. “The Virginia Plan called for a new government with three separate branches of government and representation in each house was to be based on the state’s population or on the amount of money it gave to support the central government. (Crouse, 22) The Compromise they created is known as the Connecticut Compromise. They decided on having two houses for congress.” In the senate, the states would be represented equally.
