Thermal Stability of Epoxy Polymer Heera, K.2016 Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, National Defence University of Malaysia, Kem Perdana Sg. Besi 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Keywords: Epoxy, Epoxy+LENR Abstarct. This experiment presents the most common ways to increase the epoxy’s strength and stability by adding toughening rubber called LENR which stands for , liquid epoxidized natural rubber (LENR) , in which reduces the coefficient of thermal expansion, CTE , increases thermal stability and improve mechanical rigidity of the epoxy . Besides , in this experiment it can be learned that LENR is added to epoxy matrix to enhance the thermal stability of the epoxy polymer. Liquid epoxidized natural rubber (LENR)…show more content…
The mechanical and thermal properties have been studied to observe the effect of the modified epoxy network. It was found that by adding the rubbery phase into epoxy resin, the toughness of the epoxy was improved. Besides in this experiment , different curing temperature is observed to vary the results and also to choose the best range of curing temperature to improve and enhance the thermal stability of the epoxy. There are two types of variables observed in this experiment which is to compare the condition of thermal stability and strength of epoxy , first by observing the difference between Epoxy and Epoxy+LENR with same curing temperature and second, by comparing all the Epoxies which has addition of LENR ( Epoxy+LENR) with different curing temperature. The mechanical and thermal properties have been studied to observe the effect of the modified epoxy network. It was found that by adding the rubbery phase into epoxy resin, the toughness of the epoxy was improved. The ideal curing temperature, which means that has the most higher thermal stability which that…show more content…
With their wide-ranging high-performance, epoxy resins are widely used in many applications including high performance adhesives, aerospace, automobiles and for other engineering purposes [1] When it comes to modifying the brittle nature of epoxy, an increase in toughness without any reduction in the other important properties is required, such as modulus, thermal properties and environmental corrosion resistance. One of the methods used to improve the toughness of epoxy involves the addition of a rubbery content into the uncured epoxy resins[3]. Rubber-toughened epoxy resins were prepared using the mechanical stirring method and molded into samples by compression
