Recognizing signs of domestic violence is a crucial factor in nursing care of adult patients. As quoted in Fundamentals of Nursing: The Art and Science of Nursing, intimate partner violence (IPV), a subset of domestic violence involving two individuals in a close relationship, affects more than two million adults in the United States (Taylor, Lillis, LeMone, & Lynn, 2011). Even as the nurse potentially provides care for these two million individuals, he or she must continue his or her pivotal role as an intermediary and leader in the patient’s care and safety.
