Have you ever sat in a classroom and ever wonder to look around and see different student that are probably from another city, state, or even country? All around use theres an individual that shares a different nationality and cultural. You have those that are say German however they reside in Orlando or those who are Mexican and they reside in Orlando. All these people have different nationality and cultures. For me, my family is Colombian however I was born in the United States. My parents and I share the same nationality because I was born here and they became citizens. As defined in the textbook (Shiraev & Levy, p.25), multiculturalism not only encourages the recognition of equality for several ethnic or religious groups but it also promotes the idea that various cultural groups have the right to follow their own values and practices. An individual that comes from multiple culture membership is so diverse. All these traits are beneficial to even pass down from generation to generation.In the text book, representative heuristic is when you’re judging the likelihood that something belongs to a particular category. Whereas, representative bias sometimes produces systematic errors in information processing. The textbook provided great examples such as, stating that Jane is a lesbian because she behaves like your stereotype of a lesbian or that Ted is a Jewish because he looks like a prototype of a Jewish person (Shiraev & Levy, p.46,47). Having multiple cultural memberships impacts research examine people within in a specific group because of representative bias. We our always so quick to judge other by the way you dress, speak or even act. For example, I come from a Colombian background however growing up in Miami, whenever I speak to someone they automatically think I’m Cuban. As stated in the textbook (Shiraev & Levy, p.82), representative sample is the characteristic of a sample accurately reflect the characteristic of the population. In Colombia, everyone know everyone. From a person that live on the other side of the city to even your next door neighbor. In the Colombian culture, people are always include each other and when someone seeks help, a hand is always extended. In contrast, the United States is more individualistic. Not saying that no one cares for anyone but there own however in the U.S we tend to be there mostly for families and friend than for aqauntacies or strangers. When roles our reverse, an individual that comes from an individualistic society might find it troubling when seeking help. For example, they might be more reserved and not like to receive help from others when in trouble. As mentioned in the textbook(Shiraev & Levy, p.13), collectivism is high in Asian countries, traditional societies, and the former communist countries, individualism is high in Western countries (Trianis,1996). Another example that is mentioned in the textbook is that North Americans, in comparison to Western Europeans and Asians, show a predominance of independence and individualism, as opposed to the interdependence and collectivism of other
