This essay will explain and critically evaluate how phobias can be acquired through classical conditioning. The influence of Systematic Desensitisation on overcoming phobias will also be examined. A phobia is an abnormal fear, just like an anxiety disorder where the sufferer has a relentless dread of a living creature, situation, place or thing. Huge distress can be caused if the subject is confronted with the phobia. One way that an individual can develop phobias is through classical conditioning. A technique that can be used in behavioral training is classical conditioning. First an occurring stimulus which is natural is matched with a response.Soon after, a previously neutral stimulus is paired with the naturally occurring stimulus. This…show more content…
Watson along with Rosalie Rayner tested classical conditioning on humans after being inspired by Ivan Pavlov’s previous experiment on a dog in the 1890’s. The ‘Little Albert’ experiment involved presenting different objects to the nine-month old Albert. Watson first showed Albert objects that he was not afraid of such as a dog, burning newspaper, a monkey, a rabbit and a white rat. Albert shows a positive reaction to each object, especially the white rat. The conditioning follows and the white rat is used once again. This time Watson strikes a hammer off a metal bar in the presence of the white rat and Albert becomes startled. After the hammer is struck once more Albert cries and is in stress. Watson created a fear response in Albert. Soon after Watson presented a rabbit, a dog, a fur coat and a Santa Claus mask which also provoked Albert. At 11 months Albert was brought back to be tested on and the rat was presented to him once again. Just as Albert reached for the rat Watson struck the hammer off the metal bar which made Albert cry and withdraw his hand from the rat. Albert’s response to the dog, fur coat, rabbit and monkey was then tested shortly after. The response to these objects is the same as his fearful response to the…show more content…
The sight and sound of the horse falling in front of Herbert is a conditioned stimulus(CS). The sight and sound of the commotion surrounding Herbert would have frightened him making it an unconditioned stimulus(UCS). The situation instantly distressed him causing an unconditioned response(UCR), while the learned distress from the sight of a horse was therefore a conditioned response(CR) With reference to the classical conditioning theory, the acquirement of the conditioned response was due to a conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus pairing after both stimuli were paired during Herbert’s walk with his mother.(PSY 101 - Introduction to Psychology by Jeffry Ricker, Ph.D., 2011) Systematic Desensitization is a type of behavioral therapy used to overcome phobias and other anxiety disorders. It was developed in the 1950’s by a South African psychiatrist named Joseph Wolpe.(MDJunction, 2014). The therapy aims to remove the fear response of a phobia, and substitute a relaxation response to the conditional stimulus gradually using counter conditioning.(McLeod, 2014) Another name for Systematic Desensitization is Exposure
