Ticks are responsible for the rapid spread of the bacteria that causes many cases of Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a type of infectious disease, an infectious disease is defined as a disease caused by an organism such as bacteria, virus, fungi or parasite. Lyme disease is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria (Steere 2010). This type of bacteria is of the spirochete variety, meaning long, helically coiled bacterial cells (Figure 1). Lyme disease is most often transferred by ticks called Lxodes scapularis, also known as black legged ticks (Arsnoe et al. 2015).
