Out of the approximate 1.6 billion Muslim populations in the world, about 25 percent of them resides in Southeast Asia including Indonesia, the largest Muslim population along with other majority Muslim countries, like Brunei and Malaysia. Islam is a fast spreading religion and the second largest religion after Christianity. However, the religion today is widely feared by non-Islamic population due to the high terrorists attacks assumingly done by Islamic organizations and the stringent doctrines. These fears and hatred towards Islam is coined under ‘Islamophobia’. Islam is assumed to be promoting war and violence with the contents of the holy book, Al Quran. There are a few organizations which induces fear in people such Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) and the spread of Al- Qaeda to Southeast Asia as well as ISIS, the most recent and feared terrorist organization which consists of the Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. JI is an Indonesian militant based group that was founded on September 10, 1988, a fraction of Darul Islam, an originally local jihad group. However, under the influence of Al- Qaeda, JI had become a regional jihad organization with a global focus. It is inevitable to see the increasing Islamophobia with the growing JI in Southeast Asia. For instance, the Bali bombing organized by JI has resulted in 202 deaths, leading to increasing animosity and hostility towards Muslims. Many questioned the intentions and motivations behind these terrorist organizations and their irrational ideologies that have lead to negative portrayal of Islam communities as a whole. Many may assumed such ideologies originated from the commandments from the Quran. However, the Quran denies war and violence, and largely promotes peace. The root cause of the terrorist organizations is the misinterpretation of the Quran. Many non-Muslims and even some Muslims misinterpreted the real meaning of the word Jihad. Jihad is frequently used to denote the killings of the innocents, especially the non-Muslims for political purposes. Therefore, this may results in the impression that Islam encourages violence, motivating some Muslims to organize terror attacks. However, the actual meaning of Jihad is holy war under the conditions of aggression and oppression. In the Quran, it denies any killings of the innocents and promotes humanity.
