A great story will always contains a hero who does unbelievable things. According to dictionary.com, an epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. Heros have and can do many honorable things in order to classify them as a hero. For example, heros perform heroic deeds, go on quests in order to accomplish something, are protective, or even the overall fact that heroes are just strong (both strong-minded and physically strong). In the epic poem, Beowulf, the main character, whose name just so happens to be Beowulf, goes on quests to accomplish a goal and was an overall extremely strong individual. This, along with other traits, would classify him as an epic hero of sorts.…show more content…
First of all, strength can come in many forms; there can be mental strength, as well as, physical strength. In Beowulf, both of these types are displayed. Beowulf has an obvious, overwhelming physical strength that is shown throughout the poem. For example, when Beowulf is fighting his battle with Grendel, his strength is described as something that no one else in the village can obtain, or even think to obtain. For example, in the battle Beowulf had with Grendel, it is said that, "His mind was flooded with fear—but nothing Could take his talons and himself from that tight Hard grip. Grendel’s one thought was to run From Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there"(line 276-289) This shows that Beowulf is a very intimidating person and even the beast fears him. In the battle of Grendel's mother, Beowulf has a hard time fighting her, but still manages to prove his strength. "He raised His arms and seized her by the shoulder; anger Doubled his strength, he threw her to the floor. She fell, Grendel’s fierce mother, and the Geats’ Proud prince was ready to leap on her."(493-496) This was a point in the battle that caused Beowulf's incredible strength to shine through and start to hurt the beast's mother. These two battles help to portray Beowulf's incredible strength and how heroic he actually
