An epic hero is defined as a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. An epic hero would be someone who excels in skill, strength, and courage. This person has to be willing to put their own lives on the line for the benefit of others. The epic hero would be brave, often battling demons or monsters, and honorable. He would be well respected and a man of his word, never backing down. Beowulf, an extraordinary character from the well-known Old English epic poem Beowulf, is a great example of an epic hero as he has many of the traits previously listed. He defeated many monsters including Grendel himself as well as his mother, the Troll Wife. Beowulf possesses several epic hero qualities.
