Olivia Slahta English 12 The main theme for Beowulf is good vs. evil. There are many evils in the poem that Beowulf battles. One evil in Beowulf is Grendel the monster, a descendant from Cain. Grendel is angry and destructive but he is intelligent. “Grendel would never have got away with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, havoc in Heorot and horrors everywhere." (Beowulf lines 590-594) In these lines Beowulf is talking to Unferth about Grendel and how much destruction he brings to King Hrothgar’s mead hall called Heorot. Beowulf battles Grendel and defeats him with his bare hands by tearing his arm off. This brings great fame to Beowulf. Another evil from the poem that Beowulf faces is the dragon and the end of his reign as king. Beowulf is not as strong as he once was so he battle is much more difficult. He was battling a fire breathing dragon whose bite was poisonous and Beowulf sword was not a match for the dragon’s thick skin. The dragon bites Beowulf, leading him to his death. Beowulf was a very brave and courageous warrior deciding to battle the dragon, and he will be remembered for his glory against many evils. (Beowulf lines 244-250)…show more content…
