Beeeeep. Beeeep. Beeeep. The unwelcoming sound jolted me awake, sending me into my daily routine, get ready, go to school, go to work. I roll out of bed and head for my closet. Hoodie? Looks too suspicious. Red t-shirt? Might be confused as a gang member. Jeans? I don't have a belt and any sag of my pants will deem me a “thug”. I settle for a white t-shirt and sweatpants and head to school, it’s the first day of my senior year. On my way I out I see Big Mike loading his mom’s car with what looks like dorm supplies. Damn. Time flies. Seems like just yesterday we were finding enough change around our homes for a coke and snickers, now he’s going off to Vatterott College and I’m one step closer to finishing high school. After a muggy 15-minute walk I finally arrive at St. Louis County High, I get in line for the metal detectors and pat downs required before we can step foot inside.
