Abstract Bedside manners are often an overlooked, but necessary set of skills used while treating patients. The play a necessary role in the healing process, and perhaps an even larger role in the communication process. A health care worker’s attitude, body language, tone of voice, ability to maintain eye contact, and compassionate nature is sure to aid them tremendously whenever assisting a patient. While some argue that these mannerisms cannot be taught, others argue that perhaps these traits can be learned through practice and observation. Either way, the attitude and language that is displayed while coming in contact with a patient should always be a considerable focus of the healthcare professional. There is a quick knock on the door, and the doctor steps casually into the room. As she sits down in the chair, her patient examines the physician’s eyes, in search of any clues of what news she is about to disclose. With little hesitation, she very softly delivers the news that her patient has feared – cancer. At the delicate age of 90, the patient has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctors voice remains calm, but not distant, as she delivers the details that accompany the diagnosis. While discussing treating options, the doctor supportively places a hand on her patient’s trembling hands, and reassures her own confidence in the possibility of beating the cancer. Instead of leaving the facility feeling defeated, her patient will leave feeling optimistic, all due to the positivity and compassionate attitude the doctor has portrayed. Without that attitude, her patient might have chosen to opt out of treatment and give up. Now, treatment and healing can begin without pause. This is why bedside manner is so important throughout all aspects and people involved in the healthcare
