Themes & Values: Golding’s (2009) theme of this book is asthma, and her underline values transmitted to children is that though Abby is a young girl with asthma, she will not let her asthma interfere with her goal. Abby’s character represented personality traits of a young girl who had a goal in mind of winning a big race at fair, and although she has asthma, her behavior and experiences are positive toward her condition as she learned how to deal with this condition. The characters in this story included Katie whose personality traits represented a young girl who felt frightened and uncertain about going to the hospital, and staying over night; her parents were supportive; and the doctors who helped her through the steps of operation process and stay. The story sent true messages about how life worked for Katie as her and parents, and doctors prepared her for her ear operation, and her over night stay. Message about exceptionalities: Cork (2002) presented a gentle story about Katie’s procedure and over night stay in the hospital that was written in simple texts for children as young as 2 years and older can understand. Katie’s story portrayed realistic examples that would help parents discuss this topic with their children, and reassure children about hospitalization.
