Cheerleading has been overlooked for years and they do not get the credit they deserve. American citizens deny and deny that cheer is a sport but there are many arguments that prove otherwise.America is full of disputes among the citizens and one happens to be whether cheerleading is a sport or not, and many clear points show that it is by its growth and the actual definition of a sport and the factors that are included. Cheerleading has came a long way since 1898 and has become more challenging. The more stunt difficulty they add and crazy flips they do during their stunts bump up the criteria needed. “Today, cheerleading involves skills which require the strength of football, the grace of dance, and the agility of gymnastics. Complex maneuvers are performed which challenge the limits of the body.” (Dobson). These athletes use the strength and technique needed in other sports which provides proof for one thing, that cheerleading is a sport. If the sport has the components needed and described in the meaning then it should be considered a sport with no questions and be treated with respect. Competition is the main thing that makes a sport just that. Going against another team is the whole point, isn’t it? The truth is, “in competitive cheerleading, squads compete against each other in a head-to-head fashion and are evaluated according to a standardized set of rules” (Selke). Though the way they are competing is different than football and other sports, they still have a set of rules they follow and get judged upon their skills and techniques.
