The painting Apollo and Daphne was painted by Giovanni Di Lutero, who also known as Dosso Dossi. He created this beautiful painting in 1538. The Apollo and Daphne is 6’2” by 3’ 9” oil on canvas painting located in Galleria Borghese, Rome. A picture of this painting can be found on page 352 in the textbook Experience Humanities by Roy T. Matthews, F. DeWitt Platt, and Thomas F. X. Noble. Bright, vibrant colors in the background make this painting appear to almost glow with light. The medium that Dosso Dossi chose was oil paint on canvas. The painting shows the texture of the painting and the color choices mix together very nicely. The use of oil paint allows the texture to really show up in this painting. The yellow and orange accent colors used to highlight the trees, certain places on the ground and Apollo’s cloth garment enhances these features in a very attractive manner.…show more content…
The darker lines not only show the height of the hill, but it also makes the lighter parts of the painting stand out. In the background the trees leading to the city along with the row of trees that start at Apollo’s armpit forward. This same area implies a line between the clouds and the rest of the sky. The line work helps guide the eye and make the painting flow. The form of Apollo is a main focal point of the painting. Highlights and shading help give this painting depth. The muscle tone in Apollo’s ribs and stomach muscles are achieved by using shading and highlighting techniques. His arm raised high in the air with the violin bow in hand makes the viewer anticipate him playing a song. The smaller form of Daphne in the middle ground is a bit more difficult to see.
