P4 – Explain how national initiatives promote anti-discriminatory practice In the health and social care sector there are many codes of conduct established by professional bodies, these include; care council for wales, Northern Ireland social care council and general social care council in the UK. I will be explaining how the general social care council in the UK promotes anti-discriminatory practice for social workers and how they link to some of the legislations. The first legislation I have chosen is the Equality act 2010, we all have rights and we should all be treated equally no matter the person’s race, age, gender, sexuality and culture. This includes being honest and respecting confidential information and making sure the social workers clearly explain policies about confidentiality to service users and carers. For example, it is a legal requirement for social workers to explain the confidentiality policy to the service users and let them know that everything they tell them is confidential and they will respect what has been told to them. However, social workers must also inform the service users that they can’t keep promises and if they are told something that they think may cause harm to themselves or others around them it should be informed to someone so that they are safe. This links to the Data protection act 1998 as they state that organisations are responsible for using data and have to follow the rules called data protection principles. Some of these principles include; making sure information is kept safe and secure for no longer than is absolutely necessary, this means that if they get information that may cause harm or danger to the service user it must be told to someone and action has to be taken. This promotes anti-discriminatory practices as there is a stronger case for those who come from a different ethnic background, religious beliefs and health and they should be treated equally and fairly despite their…show more content…
This act ensures that no matter if you are less able than others you still deserve to get treated fairly, this definitely promotes anti-discriminatory practice by making sure that even with a disability they will still get the same choices and rights as any other individual. This links to the general social care council as within the codes of practice for social workers they have
