The Military of Ancient Egypt Introduction Boom! Boom! Boom! The sound of modern warfare. Sling! Sling! Sling! The sound of Ancient Egypt warfare. Did you know the reason that the Egyptian didn't have an organized army? It's because the seas and deserts surrounded Egypt and therefore it created natural barriers to protect it from invading armies. Later Egypt went into war against the Hyksos. Then the capital of Egypt, Memphis, was taken by the Hyksos because they used chariots as an advantage. Finally Egypt needed to build a strong army. The chariot was also important in the Egyptian army. They were carriages with wheels and each chariot was pulled by two quick warhorses. There were two soldiers in a chariot, one controlled the chariot and the horses and the other one would fight against the enemy using the bow and arrow or a spear. Soldiers would protect themselves with a shield or they would use hardened leather straps. The life of soldiers in Egypt is very difficult. They have to keep their endurance and strength to go into battle. They not only have to be trained using the bow and arrow, but also using different weapons. They were not only soldiers but had to do farming when they didn't have war. They had to plant and harvest crops. They also had to work as a construction worker, to build temples, palaces, and pyramids. The army was led by the Pharaoh. Then there were two generals behind the Pharaoh, the first general led an army to Upper Egypt, the second general led an army to Lower Egypt. In the Late Period Armies, from 712-332 BC, the troops had weapons made out of iron. The people in Ancient Egypt were not good in weapons technology, most of the ideas of weapons and the technology came from Western Asia and the Greek world. Usage of Item The Egyptians still used the bow and arrow in the past history. The tip of the arrow was changed from stone to obsidian in the pre-dynastic period. Around 2000 BC Egyptians traded obsidian for bronze, and then they produced iron arrow heads in the 1000 BC. Archers were usually foot soldiers, but the Egyptian chariot could also carry them.
