The religion of voodoo holds a negative connotation to this day. Many believe the religion to be hellish. This is Hollywood’s doing. However, there are more aspects to the voodoo religion. Voodoo is considered to be an indigenous religion because it is a small-scale religion, which is practiced in certain areas of the world and by a limited amount of people. It holds ancestral and nature traditions. The religion has many rituals and traditions that are passed onto generations through word of mouth. Voodoo is not only the working with spirits but also a way of life for many people who practice the religion. A key founder of voodoo has not been established. Bondye does not have any interaction or interference with the human world . Bondye is responsible for the universal order and the god’s power will increase or decrease depending on the evil and good in the world. Haitian vodouisants look towards Bondye and other spirits for help. Spirits are treated with honor and respect. The Loa, the spirits, are subordinate to Bondye and interact with the human world as well as the world beyond earthly spirits . The human provides necessities and right doing while the Loa provides protection from evil spirits. The Loa are similar to the saints of Christianity. Unlike the major religions of the world, voodoo lacks a central hierarchy. The religion is followed based on a small-scale community with followers who worship at local temples. An example of an issue would relate back to the Haiti earthquake, which occurred in 2010. An American televangelist named Pat Robertson associated the devastating earthquake to the “pact to the devil” by the Haiti people. He continues to state the Haitians "were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.’ True story. And so, the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal." Though Haiti is inhabited with 80 percent of Roman Catholics, the people still hold onto voodoo beliefs.
