Most of us know who Alexander the Great was, but was he really as great as his name implied? Alexander’s early life certainly had no humble beginning and the achievements of his younger life support his name. He was born in Macedonia in 356 BC, son of King Phillip II and Olympias. Alexander was a personal student of the legendary Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle. In addition to being extremely adept academically he was described as being a charismatic, attractive, and polite young man among many other admirable qualities. By the age of 18 Alexander was a commander of the virtually unassailable Macedonian army. He helped to conquer numerous Greek City states alongside his father. Soon after Alexander had assumed his righteous role of King, he set his sight on the unfinished work of his father: to conquer the much desired Persian Empire and its innumerable riches. He not only sought riches; but to liberate the Greek people and avenge prior atrocities the Persians had committed against the Greek. He did just that, defeating the King of Persia, Darius III and pushing through the rest of Persia, conquering it. This in turn influenced Egypt to willfully become a part of Alexander’s empire, as they were liberated from Persian grip because of his actions. Alexander’s great conquering campaign did not end with the defeat of Persia. Alexander, the new, rightful King of Persia did not stop conquering; he sought to conquer land farther east to bolster the power, wealth, and glory of his empire. Alexander eventually conquered the lands of Bactria, Sogdiana, and the Hindu-Kush region of northern India on his Asiatic campaign.
