Justifying Paper: Second Draft Video games have been around been around for centuries, and through the years it has grown into a thriving and growing industry. In the modern age, there is now even awards given to them, these awards are given based on the outstanding quality of storyline, gameplay, graphics, music, and even characters. The year 2010 presented many notable games, but the most prominent would be Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, the spiritual sequel to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver – which was also produced by Rockstar. Upon its release the game was critically acclaimed, selling over one million games, garnering nominations, and winning multiple “Game of the Year” awards. But the main focus is on John Marston, the “star” of Red Dead Redemption, and an equally complicated and interesting character who has received positive criticism. Sent to an orphanage at eight years old, Marston would later join a gang at the ripe age of seventeen; where he is taught to read, write, shoot, and survive in the wild. But after a bank robbery goes wrong and he is left for dead, Marston leaves the outlaw life. Settling down in New Elizabeth on a ranch with his wife and son, attempting to now live an honest life and escape his violent past. Marston is no saint, but is instead characterized as something similar to an “anti-hero” having his own set of questionable morals. Players control Marston and therefore can choose whether or not he will be a “hero of the people” or once again an outlaw with a substantial bounty over his head. Open world has no loading screens, no invisible barriers, every action that the player does can affect how the environment reacts. Red Dead Redemption has an expansive and lush atmosphere, filled with details such as: multiple interactive animals, towns filled with saloons, sheriff offices and a variety of people. With all these interactive features, players can leisurely explore the frontier, gain money and notoriety or complete the respective objectives and finish the game quickly. Either way, it’s nearly impossible for the game to become repetitive. Red Dead Redemption’s gameplay also relies heavily on combat, primarily gunfights with a variety of period-accurate weapons available. An aspect of the gunfights would be a gunslinger ability known as “Dead Eye”. Dead Eye is a targeting system, when activated time slows down (this is also known as “bullet time”) allowing the player to place targets on multiple opponents, when the allotted time ends the character will immediately fire at each target in quick succession; taking out opponents efficiently and
