Brittany Lamb 20150507 FPS 221E 21ST September 2016 It is believed that there is a strong link between self-concept and ones academic performance. The impact of the relationships formed with learners’ during the School Experience period shall be considered as one critically analyzes whether this enhanced or reduced the learner’s self-esteem; and what impact this had on their academic performance. Further discussions shall link the analysis with various theories whilst providing concrete examples. The likes of academic self-concept make reference to a person’s “perception of self with respect to achievement in school”. His theory exhibits the idea that “people are motivated to achieve certain needs, and that some needs take precedence over others. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfil the next one, and so on. One must satisfy lower level deficit needs before progressing on to meet higher level growth needs.” (Mcleod, 2007) From most important to least important the needs are physiological needs; safety and security; love and belonging; self-esteem and self-actualization. Urie Bronfenbrenner developed the Ecological systems theory. “Human development is influenced by the different types of environmental systems. The ecological systems theory holds that human development is influenced by the different types of environmental systems and that we encounter different environments throughout our lifespan that may influence our behaviour in varying degrees. I showed interest by asking about the characters on learner’s clothing and discovered that this boosted their mood almost immediately. My interest in their physical appearance also seemed to elevate their self-esteem thus linking the scenario with Maslow’s theory. It was evident that the learner’s I had interacted with on this level were more social and had an increased involvement in class discussions as well as a better attitude when completing their independent
