In 2011-2012 there were 2,070 claims made in regards to work place bullying and/or harassment, it averages out to be approximately 2.7 claims per 10,000 employees. (SWA, Accepted Workers Compensation Claims, 2015, p.2). Workplace bullying can be described as any action that is directed towards an individual or a group of people in the work place that creates a risk to their health and or safety by repeated, unreasonable and inappropriate behaviour. A single incident of such behaviour, while it has the potential to become more or progress over time to become a work place bullying or harassment issue, it is generally not classed as bullying or harassment. Effective communicators are aware of the possible barriers that may arise in the communication process and are able to use appropriate communication techniques to avoid such interferences (Dwyer, 2012, p.3). Poor communication skills can lead to misinterpreted messages resulting in conflict as there are many forms that can be misconstrued as harassment or bullying due to an individual’s interpretation of another person’s behaviour. Seeking advice allows for the person to discover if the behaviour is in fact bullying or harassment it also aids in determining the most appropriate action to take, whether it be talking to the perpetrator one on one or reporting the behaviour to a superior. When the behaviour has been identified correctly as work place bullying or harassment then the worker being affected should refer to the policy and procedure manuals of the work place, these have been custom created for the individual work place, by following the WHS laws and regulations. The work place should have a bullying and reporting policy and procedure in place that the worker or student should follow, however if unable to find the suitable procedure a supervisor or manager would be able to inform them of the appropriate and relevant policies in place.
