In the Russian Sculptor, Alexander Archipenko’s piece entitled Silver Torso he magnificently tackles the human figure with a modernist and cubist approach. The aesthetics down to the color of the piece are simply beautiful and immediately eye catching. The negative space, shape, and fluidity of this piece scream cubism and modernism all-in-one. The Silver Torso, although made in 1931, from the viewer’s perspective could be easily seen as a part of the new age and time. At an instant, my own perspective of this piece is without a doubt outstanding and timeless; I could see this in my home today.
The Silver Torso displays strong characteristics of an analytical cubist approach by using geometric like shapes, angles, and lines. The aesthetics of this piece’s reflective mirror like tone are also captivating and almost hypnotizing; I could look at this sculpture all day without a chance of exhaustion. This type of approach gives the sculpture a sense of fluidity. The holographic or reflective like properties seen in large bodies of water is what this piece presents. Nonetheless, Archipenko creates a three-dimensional piece; however he chooses an uncommon approach. The space, slender sides, extended curvature he uses are extremely creative. Seemingly, negative space in this piece creates imaginable positive space. It is hard to not see the positive space that comes into play with the negative, although the viewer knows there is nothing there in these spaces. Also, the height of this piece works well the viewer’s perspective. This piece isn't to scale and really doesn't need to be. This piece is nearly half of the height or length of the actual human
