In the “Why We Need Violent Video Games” Ethan Gilsdorf argues that the violent video games can be beneficial for retaining aggression inside us through expressing aggression in fictional world rather than in reality. Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School Killings many people believe that violent video games are evil, the main cause of disaster, but Gilsdorf opposes to the common belief and calls violent video games the best solution for the aggressive emotions that arises in the human psyche. According to Gilsdorf, we have emotional needs, the need to be involved in action and to experience a fight, and that these emotional needs are deeply ingrained in our psyche as a result of our culture. For him the video games are merely civilized means of expression of those emotions. He states that according to video game industry spokespeople, no study points out about the cause-effect relationship between the video games violence and aggression, and that crime rate of young men is at its lowest level. For Gilsdorf Lanza’s case is the result of social isolation and disengagement rather than aggression aroused by the games. The article is unsuccessful at convincing of readers why we actually need the violent video games because the author’s arguments seem very controversial to me. His main argument that video games can satisfy and replace emotional experiences that are part of our culture and originated in our psyche is far from the truth from my experience. The real experience differs greatly from the simulated experience that video games provide. For example, I played video games, mainly football, but my need to play football in the field, to engage in real action, was never satisfied and replaced by the video
