Who Is Squealer In Animal Farm

In the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell, the pig, Squealer, is the propagandist. He is able to completely brainwash the animals by using clever wording. He is a talented oral speaker. Hence, a thesaurus, a bag of dirt, a sock puppet, and the decorations on the decorated box represent his personality and speaking tactics. As shown in the primary chapters, a thesaurus represents Squealer. With a thesaurus, one looks for a better word choice of an already existing word, to be more clear and concise. This is exactly what Squealer does, except it comes to him naturally. He is able to selective with his word choice to be as persuasive as possible. He was “a brilliant talker… The others said of {him} that he could turn black into white,” For example, Squealer used the word ‘tactics’ instead of manipulation. The animals didn’t know what either word meant, but tactic means strategy, while manipulation means controlling or handling something or someone. He is selective with his word choices, while hiding the full truth in what he says.…show more content…
Dirt is stereotyped as a bad thing, a blemish in something. In personality, it is a fault. In Squealers case it represents the ‘dirt’ in what he says. In other words, he lies. This is shown at Boxer’s death. Boxer was sold to the horse slaughterer, but Squealer tells the animals, “The van had previously been the property of the knacker, and had been bought by the veterinary surgeon.” This means that the van which was labeled horse slaughterer was bought by the Vet, but wouldn’t that seem ironic? Wouldn’t he/she have common sense to not have an ironic truck name? The animals are too naive to realize this, and they believe Squealers
