Don’t Let Them Eat Cake, Let Them Eat Pigs Propaganda has snuck its way into every country including the United States and is key for a leader to gain control and power. Unfortunately, propaganda is easy to dismiss and not even realize. This makes everyone in the world at risk of being a pawn to a dictator. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell,pigs take charge after successfully creating an orderly farm under the leadership of a large boar named Napoleon. Napoleon maintains power and acts as if he were a cunning human. This is because the novel reflects upon the author’s personal perspective of Russia under Stalin’s rule through a farm and animals in England. First, in the book Animal Farm, there is “a small fat pig named Squealer, with very round cheeks, twinkling eyes, nimble movements, and a shrill voice” (Orwell 35). Shortly after the rebellion, Squealer induces the animals to let the pigs eat all of the nutritious apples and milk to be strong for Jones’s possible return. Squealer frightening the animals is an example of fear, which was a common form of propaganda used in Russia at the time of World War II. For example, Josef Stalin often threatened to kill people who wouldn’t comply with the rules, and he even killed people who wouldn’t name possible spies. This proves that due to similar usage of fear, it is obvious that Squealer represents propaganda. Second, the animals end up witnessing a van taking away Boxer, supposedly to a hospital. However, the animals learn that the van belongs to a “horse slaughterer” (Orwell 123). The animals who read the phrase on the van immediately spread the word that Boxer will be slaughtered, but Squealer immediately shuts down the rumors by telling them that the van belongs to the hospital. First, one of the first main events in the book Animal Farm is when the animals rebel against the humans and kick them off the farm. This event represents the Russian Revolution and the beginning of Stalin’s regime. This is because in both the animal rebellion and the Russian revolution, the common population overthrow the leaders they believed to be flawed. This proves that the book Animal Farm is a representation of Stalin’s Russia. Second, after Napoleon takes leadership and proves his power, Napoleon orders dogs to attack the animals confessing to ridiculously fake crimes against the farm. The dogs end up killing numerous animals including some of Napoleon’s devoted pigs. These executions represent Stalin’s murder of high ranking military officials and when he tortured people to confess crimes to the public for a “show”. After numerous animals’ confessions, the people were immediately deemed guilty and were executed. Since both Stalin and Napoleon killed their people or animals who confessed to false crimes, it is obvious that Napoleon represents Stalin and that the book Animal Farm reflects Stalin’s Russia. Third, after coming across some timber, Napoleon sells it to Frederick of Pinchfield farm. Frederick ends up cheating the farm by paying with counterfeit money and taking the timber nonetheless.
