In the Odyssey, the goddess Athena assists Odysseus many times on his journey. Athena saw aspects of herself in him, and it made her want to help him. She saw that Odysseus believed in taking action for the things that he believed in, and she was surprised because that was her way of doing things as well. Athena fended off Poseidon quite a few times, trying her best to get Odysseus home safely. At one point, she even went to Zeus, the god of all gods, and implored him to give his consent so that she could intervene. Odysseus was fortunate and delighted by her help, for her relied on her greatly. In real life, there are many people that are kind and helpful just as Athena was to Odysseus.
