S. Rifleman Dodd: A Novel of the Peninsular Campaign. Washington: Kingfisher Publishing, 1933. 1. Contextual Information a. Background and Thesis. (1) Rifleman’s Dodd is by C.S. Forester and is a novel about Matthew Dodd who is a rifleman for 95th regiment of the British Army whose enemy was the French. This book takes place in the early 1800s in Portugal and portrays the life that a British rifleman experienced during that time of conflict. (2) The thesis is based on Matthew Dodd and his endeavors in Portugal but it also lies in the eyes of the Frenchman who explained their side of the story as well. Even though Matthew goes through hell and back, he maintains his courage and honor which show an example for any military individual to emulate. b. Summary of Key Arguments. (1) Even though this novel is fictional, Mathew shows “unwavering” and “selfless” dedication and highlights the Marine Corps core values such as courage. Matthew who is separated from his regiment by enemy forces who are in pursuit of his comrades who are retreating, he is determined to battle all the way out of enemy lines. During his journey he coordinates a group of Portuguese guerrillas who assist in slowing the French’s advances.
