Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, was a very religious and intelligent man. Jefferson was born in 1743 to a successful family. He studied law and soon became a lawyer after graduating from the College of William and Mary. Jefferson then went to become a member of Virginia’s House of Burgesses in 1768. In 1772, he married Martha Wayles Skelton and then began his family of six children. It is believed that Jefferson, a slave-owner, also fathered children to his slave Sally Hemmings.
