Vidyadaan Padmashree Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya, born poor could only study till the 6th standard. But education provided him the opportunity to move out of poverty. In 1939, after facing great hardship, he built sugar manufacturing factories at Sakarwadi and Laxmiwadi in Maharashtra. With a strong belief in giving back to society, he decided the best Daan ( giving back) would be Vidyadaan ( Gift of knowledge). He believed that education is that one tool that can better the life of the poor. He founded Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust in 1959 to create quality education institutions. They do understand the importance of education, but are often not able to give the attention that it needs. For them, just making their daily living takes their time. They are not able to support their child at home for studying etc. The children often do house work and some even work in fields. So we have to be understanding of their conditions, and ensure that the children remain motivated. Thus making education affordable and accessible is important. Also important is for parents to see that the school is of a good quality and so making the sacrifices needed for the child to study there will be worth the effort. The advantage we have is that the villagers know that in our school there are good facilities like bathrooms etc. for the girls. We have built immense trust with the villagers. They have seen over the years that the girls protected and well taken care of. The food that we provide is healthy and nourishing. The factory management and the Somaiya Vidyavihar trust take great interest in the school. This gives the villagers a confidence in sending the children to the school.
