Becoming a Veterinary Technician in Georgia: Laws and Regulations It is important to know the laws and regulations, to become a licensed veterinary technician, for the state you plan on working in. Not all states have the same requirements, and it is up to the individual to know what they are. This paper will show the laws and regulations for a veterinary technician in the state of Georgia. There are several steps to becoming licensed, as a veterinary technician, in Georgia. To start, a fifty dollar, notarized application, with a current photo must be filed. The state of Georgia has firm guidelines for each of these three types of supervision. With immediate supervision a veterinary technician working under the direction, supervision and control of a licensed veterinarian can provide animal patient care, such as surgical assistance (GVMA). Direct supervision means that a licensed veterinarian is on site and is easily available and the animal patient has been examined by a licensed veterinarian. A veterinary technician working under a licensed veterinarian may also provide the following: euthanasia, administration of blood and/or blood components to animal patients, apply splints or slings, perform dental procedures including removal of calculus, soft deposits, plaque and stains, the smoothing, filing or polishing of teeth, or the floatation or dressing of equine teeth. This may also include non-emergency intubations, induced and maintenance of anesthesia, and assisting any licensed veterinarian in measuring quantities of medicines, but excluding dispersing, compounding, or mixing drugs. Dental extractions, not requiring sectioning of tooth or re-sectioning of bone, performing central venous, arterial catheterization, or arterial collection is also permitted under direct supervision…show more content…
This excludes the rabies vaccine for animals required to receive rabies vaccine by Georgia law (GVMA). Indirect tasks also includes administration and application of treatments, drugs and immunological agents by intravenous routes, radiography such as setting, positioning, processing and safety procedures, the collection of blood for diagnostic purposes, collection of urine by expressing or catheterization, collection of feces, tissue, cellular or microbiological samples by skin scrapings, impressions or other non-surgical methods of diagnostic purpose. Indirect procedures for routine lab testing, and collection of urine by cystocentesis, and blood and/or blood component collection and prep for transfusion is also permitted (GVMA). A veterinary technician working under a licensed veterinarian may also provide the following emergency animal patient care: application of tourniquets and/or pressure bondages to control hemorrhage, resuscitative procedures, applying temporary splints and/or bandages to prevent further damage to bones or soft tissue, application of appropriate wound dressings and external supportive treatment for severe wound and burn cases, and external supportive treatment in heat prostration cases (GVMA).
