The Underground Railroad was never underground or even railroad. Its name came from all of the secret activities that were conducted on it. Everyone on it had to use darkness, disguises, and a variety of different terms to explain how it worked. The different routes were called lines, stopping places were called stations, those who helped were called conductors, and slaves were known as freight or cargo. This network of routes went through 14 Northern states and Canada – often called “The Promise Land” and also where the fugitive-slave hunters were unable to get to them.
