December 18, 2015 Period 4 Mrs. Dowling Not A Thug Tupac Shakur was known as a rapper. He was put under the stereotype of an unintelligent, gang affiliated, African American criminal. Many people did not take the time to understand his views on the world and just saw the surface of Tupac. Tupac was more of a poet. He wrote music that people could relate to. In the early 1990’s a subculture emerged that transformed rap music entirely and went on to affect an incredible amount of young people. Amidst rioting in Los Angeles and the election of President George Bush after Ronald Regan, this culture began to form as an outlet for young African American men to vent their frustration growing up in impoverished, neglected, and drug-ridden areas.
