Tuesdays with Morrie is a book that is meant to change people’s way of thinking towards Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and people with disabilities. One of the themes in this book is rejection of popular culture and Morrie Schwartz needing to change culture around disabilities including ALS. Rejecting popular culture is beneficial towards everyone in society, but no one wants to believe it. In the book, Morrie is diagnosed with ALS and throughout the story, the disease starts affecting him in many different ways. Morrie has to deal with these changes and it shows what ALS is doing to Morrie. People need to ignore popular culture because popular culture is making people believe what society tells them without them having a say in their own beliefs. Morries intention towards people wanting to accept their personal culture, even if they have a certain illness that they do not want to accept, is to help people take their own side on their own beliefs and not listen to what other people say they are. A disease or illness that you have should not stop people from interacting with you, unless it is contagious. Then again, that is also a problem because out of the majority of society, that is why people do not acknowledge or spend time with someone who has a disability because they are afraid that person is contagious. For example, cancer is NOT contagious unless it is transmitted through blood because cancer cells inside our body cannot be spread without having direct blood to blood contact. Statistics say that two thirds of the British public feel uncomfortable talking to disabled people. Morrie wanted to change the way people thought about ALS and other disabilities because no one has the right to be neglected all because there is something wrong with them.
