During the time Jefferson was writing about freedom, liberty and equality, the slave population was increasing, there were more than five hundred thousand slaves, which was almost one fifth of the population (Foner, 182). Jefferson and Washington denounced the enslaving of people and thought it was horrible meanwhile, Jefferson had over 100 slaves and Washington had hundreds of slaves. Even the men who signed the document owned slaves as well, out of the fifty six who signed the Declaration of Independence forty-one owned slaves (Lecture, 9/17).The people of the founding generation did not think blacks were good enough to be a part of society.
