In the African-American community, marriage is believed as a need to complete life, and is not necessarily attached with love or emotions. Men sees marriage as only an extra in life, and women’s role in marriage are merely as housewives, and women sees marriage as a fulfillment of material things regardless it is connected to love or not. In “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” Zora Neale Hurston illustrate Janie’s idea of love and marriage through her different phase of life. Janie’s adventure in finding the meaning of love gone through three different phase. First is through her life with her grandmother, Nanny. Because she never experienced a normal marital relationship through her mother’s and/or grandmother’s life. Thus, she seeks to find a comfortable and ideal marital relationship. Janie believes that love can only be attained if both people are in love. The second phase that Janie undergone in order to find the meaning of love and marriage is from her marriage with Logan. Within her marriage with Logan. Janie feels like her freedom is taken away from her. She is neglected and Logan doesn’t care for her and doesn’t show affection towards her. What she dreams of is a physical and emotional connection which she doesn’t get from him. Because of this she feels that Logan is not love that she is searching for. Because of Jody’s charm and dreams about making change, makes Janie wonder whether he is the one.
