The Secret Life of Bees “Let’s just imagine for a moment we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive, usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..”(82). Lily is the narrator and the main character. She adds humor to situations that would be very depressing when she is in the darkness of her life. Lily is a girl from the South that has an unforgiving father and a mother that has died. Rosaleen is a black woman that takes care of Lily. Rosaleen and Lily are jailed after an incident in town. Lily’s father only bails out Lily, because of this she decides to run away with Rosaleen. They then go to live with the Boatwrights. Lily and Rosaleen have faced many challenges and struggles in their lives but have overcome the darkness in different ways to emerge as strong women.…show more content…
The main difference being their race. Lily magnifies how different they were treated in society by saying, “ If you stay here, those men are gonna come back and kill you, I’m serious. They’re gonna kill you, like those colored people in Mississippi got killed. Even T.Ray said so.”(46-47). Rosaleen is a middle-aged women, while Lily is a fourteen year-old teenager which emphasizes how many more experiences Rosaleen has had opposed to Lily. Rosaleen can relate to the Boatwright sisters because they are also middle-aged black women that may have been in similar situations as her. This causes Lily to feel like an outsider because of her white skin color. Overall, August gave Lily a motherly figure making her feel at home even though Lily sometimes feels like an outsider. “I love this place with my whole heart.”
