In The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, the style enhances the nightmarish quality of the work. This is shown when Kafka describes the features of Gregor Samsa after waking up from troubled dreams, “He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections” (Kafka, Paragraph One). In this sentence, the author reveals to us the new astonishing looks of Gregor. These descriptions show the straightforward writing of Franz through his incredible explanation of Gregor’s new body. One of those examples is the office assistance, “The office assistant was the boss's man, spineless, and with no understanding. What about if he reported sick? But that would be extremely strained and suspicious as in fifteen years of service Gregor had never once yet been ill. His boss would certainly come round with the doctor from the medical insurance company, accuse his parents of having a lazy son, and accept the doctor's recommendation not to make any claim as the doctor believed that no-one was ever ill but that many were workshy” (Kafka, Paragraph six). In this quote, the author’s style shows when he describes the dark side of the office assistant. Also, this quote shows the hardship Gregor goes through when dealing with him. The Last example of Kafka’s nightmarish quality is when Samsa is trying to get out of his bed, “He would have used his arms and his hands to push himself up; but instead of them he only had all those little legs continuously moving in different directions, and which he was moreover unable to control” (Kafka, Paragraph nine). In this example, the author emphasizes the struggle of being a non-human figure through the thoughts and trials Gregor does.
