E.M. Forster nearly predicted the future when he voiced this quote in his short story The Machine Stops, “But Humanity, in its desire for comfort, had over-reached itself. It had exploited the riches of nature too far. Quietly and complacently, it was sinking into decadence, and progress had come to mean the progress of the Machine.”
I have nothing to offer anyone except my own bitter delusion.
Limp bodies lay scattered all over the incommodious ground. Their eyes bloodshot and hollow. A part of my already dying mind shattered as I gazed upon the disfigured bodies lying around me. They looked like monsters with their ankles twisted in an unusually gruesome manner facing sideways and their heads looked as though someone had tried to ram them…show more content… My first instinct is to run as we have learnt not to trust anyone but then I see his lips curve into a smile and somehow I know that we can trust him. He reaches where we are standing and we immediately begin thanking him for rescuing us from the grit. He tells us that he was just doing his duty and I ask if he is a military man but his only response is a sharp laugh.
Then, he begins telling us that he is part of a furtive research group that helps people like us. He tells us the object he holds is a special weapon that puts the grits to sleep for a few moments and so we have to start moving before the grit awakens.
After we are as far away from the grit as we can possibly get, our savior continues telling us about his research group. They call themselves the aspirants and for years have been attempting to make a serum to reverse the effects of grits. They have failed continually but keep on trying as the rest of the remaining world has lost all hope and so they cannot afford to do so. Someone needs to be the light in this dark period.
He then, to our absolute joy, informs us that there is a safe zone situated not far from here and we should go there.We ask him to lead us there but he refuses and says he needs to go save other people from the same fate as us and so after giving us a few brief directions, our guardian angel turns and leaves us
