Trying to find a missing loved one is a desperation that eats up the flesh of oneself. Philomena is a 2013 drama film based on the book ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’ by Martin Sixsmith (2009), which is a nonfiction story about Philomena Lee’s search for her son with a help of a journalist who also became a writer of this story, Sixsmith. This film received several international awards such as the People’s Choice Award Runner-Up prize at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and Best Screenplay at the 70th Venice International Film Festival (Collin, 31 Oct 2013). The message this movie implies is that unexpected pregnancy leads to disastrous outcomes. Philomena Lee, a young lady was sent to an abbey by her father in Ireland in 1951, since she was pregnant without marriage after making love with a boy whom she met at a fair. The nuns in the abbey sent her son to a couple for an adoption without warning Philomena.…show more content…
She barely had enough money to support herself, but had to take care of the baby, too. The baby was not a blessing to her and viewed as a burden. This caused the mother was forced to give up for the better, which later on caused her to feel unexplainable sadness in her life. She could have been a content lady with a loving daughter by her side. “Anthony! Anthony!” of Lee calling her son in desperation as he got adopted unknowingly shows that having an unexpected baby caused her to be in a distraught condition in her life. She would not have that emptiness of losing her son against her will. The costume Lee was presented in the movie portrayed the low status, which meant unsatisfying life for her son. However, the zooming in on the fancy vehicle Anthony was taken away in shows a better life he could be having than he did with her.
