Online education which is been used by billions of students all over the world has become a flexible and a convenient means of education. This method of learning spans almost two centuries and is known using different names such as e-learning and distance learning. The term online learning gained access from 1980's whereas the term e-learning does not have its origins disclosed (J.L. Moore et al,2011) So what exactly is online education? Online education or Distance education is defined by the United Distance Learning Association as an "education program whereby students may complete all or part of an educational program in a geographical location apart from the institution hosting it". Moreover certain researches conducted in 2010 and 2011 in the United States places more importance on online education since an increasing number of students are enrolling on at least one online course. Further speaking in Kendall’s view two main benefits of online education is the flexibility provided for students with busy schedules along with the high level of discipline required to effectively complete an online education. Though when it comes to face to face interaction traditional education outweighs online education. Adding to this, another article published by George in 2014 supports Kendall’s view regarding the flexibility, accessibility and the level of discipline offered by online courses. A further question which has risen in the article is the availability of certain online courses and whether employers accept these online degrees. In the article, George Miller further states that though online education has its advantages in some fields face to face education is a necessity such as clinical degrees. Adding to this, online education also avoids commuting. That is students will not have to miss important sessions due to sickness or any natural disasters. (2006-2015 OEDb.com) So I would conclude by saying that, though online education has its cons such as fewer lecturers -student face to face interaction and less motivation when compared to traditional method of learning it still has many advantages such as flexibility, accessibility, high level of discipline, comfort and reduced cost.
