The epidermis is part of a major component in the integumentary system. The cutaneous membrane, which can be referred to as skin, is an organ composed of the epidermis and the underlying connective tissues of the dermis. The epidermis is a superficial epithelium that is composed of strata or layers with various functions. The epidermis consists of a stratified squamous epithelium that has two types of skin. One type is thick skin, which contains five epidermal layers that can be found in the hands and soles of the feet. However, thin skin contains only four epidermal layers and it covers the rest of the body. The stratum basale is made up of cell divisions by the stem cells that replace more superficial cells.
