THEMES The Alchemist is classified by many as a self-help book. Paulo Coelho did not originally intend for his book to be classified as self-help, as he said in an interview with Hannah Pool, “No, I am not a self-help writer. I am a self-problem writer. When people read my books I provoke some things.” (http://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/mar/19/paulo-coelho-interview) Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the themes Coelho included in The Alchemist played a great role in projecting the book as a problem solver.
