The underwater adventure “The Abyss” definitely foreshadows director James Cameron’s future in film. In “The Abyss” a diving team is faced with the task of searching for and recovering a nuclear submarine that has been submerged underwater. The team includes its leader Virgil ‘Bud’ Brigman played by Ed Harris along with Brigman’s soon to be ex wife Lindsey Brigman played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Not only do the couple’s martial issues make for a dramatic film but also; the suspicious NAVY SEAL Officer Hiram Coffey played by Michael Biehn who is breathing down everyone’s neck at every turn makes everyone shaky. To top it all off the threat of being on top of an alien life forms home base adds a whole other level of stress to everyone…show more content…
Firstly, the writing of this film worked so well because it allowed for a gradual, steady incline in suspenseful entertainment. There wasn’t a moment that felt to slow and needed to be quickened or a moment that felt too fast and forced and seemed to come out of nowhere. In other words, the films’ writing does a great job at pacing the film in a way that continuously builds anticipation and therefore leaves the audience on the edge of their seats waiting for the next shoe to drop. Secondly, the writing does an excellent job of not “dumbing down” the film. The film writing puts a sense of reliability in the audience’s intelligence and their ability to understand quickening plots and larger scientific terminology like “High pressure nervous syndrome” while at the same time making the film easy to understand. Thirdly, the script also does a good job at keeping the audience interested despite the material. One would think that with all the hard to understand scientific facts being thrown around that the audience would disconnect themselves from the film due to the difficult material but instead, these terms seems to be one of the most fascinating points about the film. The scientific terminology leaves a feeling of wonder in the audience and makes the audience hungry to dive into more of these terms and learn more about the passengers on the rig and life underwater, therefore making for a captivating film that hook’s the audience
