As Grendel has lost his battle with Beowulf, he stumbles into the darkness losing enormous amounts of blood. He comes across a cliff and slowly moves towards it. “I look down, down, into bottomless blackness, feeling the dark power moving in me like an ocean current, some monster inside me...moving me slowly to my voluntary tumble into death”(Gardner 173). In this moment, Grendel realizes that he is alone, yet again. Something deep inside him gives him the strength to move forward into this dark abyss.
