Deaf Hearing Boy Summary

In the “Deaf Hearing Boy” the boy tells a story about when he grew up with deaf parents. His family had made a dramatic move from living out on a farm to moving to a city in 1942.In 1942 the family had moved again. They moved because his father was looking for a job. The family had great success there because his father worked in a factory. His mother loved living in the urban life because she was able to interact with other deaf people in the deaf community. But by the end of the war the family wasn’t doing so great. The soldiers came back from the war and took the deaf peoples jobs. Leaving them to search for money and a new job. But by 1949 the family had moved back to the farms. It was hard on the boy's family because when they were living in the city they had much more support in the deaf community. While the boy was growing up he lived on a farm with his parents and grandparents. When he was growing up he realized how his parents were treated and how people just assumed that “Deaf and Dumb”.…show more content…
He wanted to live with a hearing family. The family eventually couldn’t afford the family farm anymore. It was to small and the grandparents had saved as much money as they could in the past but they didn’t put any of the money back into the farms. In 1953 the family had sold everything on the farm. Even though the family had sold everything on the farm they had rented the farm out to another farmer. The boy’s felt like he was an outsider to the deaf community and his parents had told him that he needed to get his place in the hearing world. When the boys parents were in school the learning of ASL and the teaching of ASL was forbidden. The way the parents were taught was that there teacher wanted them to learn how to lip read which would make them feel they would have a place in the hearing
